Do antibiotics work for several days so no need to take after a tooth extraction?

I took a course of antibiotics before my bottom wisdom tooth extraction and took 2 more tablets after extraction but ive been told they work for several days so no need to take them now?..I mean what are the chances of an infection after tooth extraction even if antibiotics are taken just before extraction…They are in you’re system for several days so isn’t it same thing as taking them after?.

Thank you.

You are playing a dangerous game taking antibiotics recklessly. Too many doctors (physicians and dentists) seem to think antibiotics is a miracle drug that cures all sorts of problems. Antibiotics have even been routinely prescribed for pain when it absolutely does nothing for pain. Antibiotics should be used only when there is an active UNCONTROLLED infection present. You will know this when you have swelling, which is a sign of an infection spreading. When your body’s natural defenses cannot control infection, that is when antibiotics should be taken.

Why is taking antibiotics always a risk? because every time you take a dose, your body becomes sensitized to it. The more you take it, the more allergic you will become to it. Then when you are faced with a life threatening situation where antibiotics are necessary, you may not be able to have it to save your life.

This is the reason why the American Heart Association have completely revamped their guidelines to physicians and dentists prescribing antibiotics to their patients. Yet in my dental career, I still saw many offices and hospitals give antibiotics for tooth pain when it was not called for. Many people (as well as professionals) do not realize how serious a problem this is.
